Presently, a new round of S&T revolution and industrial transformation is taking shape, and it has become a global consensus to promote sustainable development through innovation. "Talent is the key to the rule of a kingdom". The true essence of innovation-driven development is talent-driven development, and talent is the most important, central and fundamental part of sci-tech innovation. Emerging as a sci-tech innovation hub with international influence and attractiveness and deepening its ties with the global innovation network, China has created an enabling atmosphere for the effective pooling of global talent, technology, capital and other innovation resources.
In order to implement the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping's important speech on comprehensively pushing forward with COVID-19 control and socio-economic development, and to fully implement the decisions and arrangements of China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) to bring into full play the strengths of CAST system in intellectual expertise and organizational network, to assist enterprises in resuming work and production and to contribute to the integration of science and technology with economy, China Centre for International Science and Technology Exchange (CISTE) is teaming up with ScientistIn to launch a global database of selected sci-tech innovation projects and experts, to promote the R&D cooperation between domestic enterprises and overseas sci-tech innovation teams through the platform of "Star of Sci-Tech Innovation", to jointly build an international expert workstation serving domestic enterprises, to ratchet up the application, transfer and commercialization of advanced technologies, and to help win the war against the epidemic through strengthened information sharing and closer cooperation on drug and vaccine R&D and epidemic control.
Through meticulous preparations in the early stage, sponsored by CISTE and organized online by ScientistIn, the First Online Roadshow of Overseas Sci-Tech Innovation Teams and the Launch Ceremony of the "Star of Sci-Tech Innovation" Platform was held on April 8 and attended by the representatives of science and technology associations in Beijing, Shanxi, Jilin, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Jiangxi, Shandong, Henan, Guangdong, Chongqing, Sichuan, Yunnan, Shaanxi, Shenzhen and Qingdao, as well as representatives from the Secretariat of World Young Scientist Summit, research institutes, biotech companies, financial institutions and investment companies. This online roadshow was relayed by Guangming Online (gmw.cn) and Toutiao, attracting a total of 33,862 audience, including 3,706 watching on ZOOM and 30,156 watching on Guangming Online.
The five overseas sci-tech innovation teams were composed of top-notch students from top universities both at home and abroad and accomplished experts in relevant sectors, including: researchers and doctoral supervisors from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS); doctoral students from the University of Pittsburgh; former chief economist of Nomura China; doctoral students from the Harvard University; doctoral students from the University of Georgia; senior scientists from the Touro University California; doctoral students under a joint PhD programme of the University of Science and Technology of China and the King's College London; professors and doctoral supervisors at Hefei National Laboratory for Physical Sciences at the Microscale, University of Science and Technology of China; doctoral students from Purdue University; and fellows of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE).
The five projects presented on the roadshow are concentrated in the field of life and health sciences, and are the selected projects of each overseas sci-tech innovation team. Wu Ligang, co-founder and chief scientist of the exosomes + ctDNA innovation team, and Zhao Yang, co-founder and CEO of the same team, jointly released a solution for earlier and more accurate tumor liquid biopsy. Employing deep sequencing technology to detect nucleic acid markers of organisms, this solution can be used for detection and sequence analysis, as well as for tumor diagnosis, efficacy evaluation and targeted drug delivery. Liu Han, co-founder and chief operating officer of the digital PCR innovation team, released the new-generation Mozhuo Digital PCR System, which can replace the existing molecular diagnostic technologies and unlock applications in fields such as modern molecular biology research, tumor screening, companion diagnostics, infectious disease diagnosis, food safety, agricultural and animal husbandry inspection and quarantine, etc. Wu Dong, co-founder and chief scientist of the tetrodotoxin innovation team, released a novel tetrodotoxin production system which boasts great potential for the large-scale and batch production of tetrodotoxin and allows the broad clinical application of tetrodotoxin as painkiller. Li Junpei, founder and CEO of the safe and healthy macromolecular colorant innovation team, released the macromolecular colorant which, in addition to the general features of micromolecular dyes, boasts higher safety, higher strength and better weather resistance, and has broad application prospects in fields such as cosmetics, paint coating, photoelectric materials, biomedicine, etc. Ren Yue, co-founder and deputy general manager of the portable mass spectrometer innovation team, released a fast and reliable on-site detection solution which allows one-click fast and automated qualitative analysis of volatile and non-volatile targets under normal pressure, thus providing users with instant and accurate information about chemical compounds. It can be widely used in fields such as public security, customs inspection, healthcare, food and drug inspection, etc.
During the roadshow, professional opinions were offered by the following experts for each project to inform the future cooperation: Mao Jianping, researcher at the Academy of Military Medical Sciences (AMMS) of the PLA Academy of Military Science; Liu Bo, General Manager and Managing Partner of TusStar; Li Jun, Board Chairman of BUAA Incubator and BUAA Science and Technology Park; Li Xuhui, Director of the Department of Science and Technology Innovation and Academic Leader of the Department of Biotechnology and Biomedicine, Yangtze Delta Region Institute of Tsinghua University, Zhejiang; and Wei Xian, Deputy Director of the Department of International Cooperation, International Innovation Centre of Tsinghua University, Shanghai.
The roadshow drew broad attention from local science and technology associations, domestic and foreign research institutes, enterprises and investors, who gave positive feedback after the roadshow. High-ranking officials of Hubei Association for Science and Technology expressed their willingness to become a supporter of such roadshows in the future. Anhui Association for Science and Technology will apply to its superior authority for regular integration into such roadshows. Shanghai Association for Science and Technology organized HOME Base, parks, investment companies and financing institutions to watch the roadshow. Among them, Yangpu Base gave feedback immediately after the roadshow, expressing its huge interest in two projects promoted on the roadshow and its wish to meet with the corresponding innovation teams to introduce the relevant preferential policies of Yangpu Base. Guangxi and Jiangxi Associations for Science and Technology praised the roadshow as pragmatic, effective and inspiring for the work of local science and technology associations.
In the coming years, on the basis of such "Cloud Model", CISTE will regularly hold online roadshows to promote overseas sci-tech innovation teams and their selected projects, build an overseas experts & resources sharing platform, assist domestic enterprises in carrying out R&D cooperation with overseas sci-tech innovation teams, urge both suppliers and purchasers to abide by international norms and conventions, strengthen the protection of intellectual property rights, uphold the principles of voluntariness, equality, fairness, integrity and credibility, and promote more forms of industrial innovation and cooperation.
