Wan Gang Attends the Video Conference on China-Sweden Research Cooperation on COVID-19

In the afternoon of March 8th, CAST and the Central Committee of China Zhi Gong Party jointly held a video conference on promoting China-Sweden research cooperation in the fight against COVID-19. Wan Gang, Vice Chairman of CPPCC, President of CAST and Chairman of the Central Committee of China Zhi Gong Party, attended the video conference and gave a speech. The video conference was also attended by: Jiang Zuojun, Standing Committee member of CPPCC, Deputy Secretary-General of CPPCC, and Executive Deputy Chairman of the Central Committee of China Zhi Gong Party; Yan Xiaopei, Standing Committee member of CPPCC, Deputy Director of the CPPCC Committee for Liaison with Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and Overseas Chinese, and Vice Chairman of the Central Committee of China Zhi Gong Party; Zhao Jiajun, Vice Chairman of CPPCC Shandong Provincial Committee, Chairman of Shandong Provincial Committee of China Zhi Gong Party, and Director of the Central Medical and Health Committee of China Zhi Gong Party; and Shu Wei, member of CAST Leading Party Members' Group and Secretary of CAST Secretariat.
Wan Gang first thanked medical researchers from home and abroad for their creative efforts in combating COVID-19. He pointed out that since the outbreak of COVID-19, under the leadership of President Xi Jinping and with the joint efforts of people from all walks of life both at home and abroad, China has quickly contained the spread of the epidemic and has accumulated much successful experiences in the treatment of COVID-19. Presently, the COVID-19 epidemic is spreading quickly across the globe and has become a common challenge facing people all over the world. People from all nations, especially medical researchers, must make concerted efforts, exert their ingenuity and wisdom and carry out scientific practices, thereby contributing to the building of a community of shared future for mankind.
Wan Gang pointed out that the ongoing China-Sweden research cooperation on COVID-19 is not only the common aspiration of S&T professionals from the two countries, but also the realistic needs arising from the spread of the epidemic. He also offered five suggestions for China-Sweden cooperation: continue to provide good suggestions for the diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19; summarize and improve the diagnosis and treatment methods in a timely manner; carry out in-depth basic research; kick off science popularization actions; and continuously carry out open research cooperation.
At the video conference, Shu Wei gave a comprehensive introduction to how CAST has given full play to its advantages in academics, science popularization and think tank since the outbreak and carried out fruitful work in emergency science communication, advice and suggestion offering, and international cooperation. Yan Xiaopei introduced how domestic and international medical researchers in close touch with the Zhi Gong Party actively offered advice and suggestions for the fight against the epidemic, and the results achieved. Dai Gang, Science and Technology Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in Sweden, introduced the China-Sweden Framework Agreement on S&T Cooperation and how the Swedish science community responded to the epidemic. Representatives from the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology introduced the work done by the S&T Task Force under the Joint Prevention and Control Mechanism of the State Council. Cao Yihai, President of the Nordic Zhi Gong Association, foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), and a tenured professor at MTC, Karolinska Institutet, introduced ideas related to China-Sweden S&T cooperation. Other domestic experts introduced the efforts made to fight COVID-19 and to tackle S&T challenges.
The video conference was also attended by: Liu Yang, Direct of CAST Department of International Affairs; Luo Hui, Director-General of CISTE; Zhao Xiaoping, Deputy Director of Liaison Department, Central Committee of China Zhi Gong Party; Tao Yisheng, Vice Chairman of Anhui Provincial Committee of China Zhi Gong Party, and Director of Anhui Provincial Health Commission; Chen Yuguo, President of Qilu Hospital of Shandong University; Zhang Zhaofeng, Director of the Division of Biotechnology and Medicine, Department of Science and Technology for Social Development, MOST; and Ye Peiqun, Chairman of the Nordic Zhi Gong Association.
